Another western piece. The poker game that descends into a brawl is a classic staple of any saloon worth its whiskey. I had a bit of difficulty with what to put on the guy throwing the punch, because I wanted to show off his arms but I didn't want him barechested. So he ended up wearing just a vest, which (along with the leather arm bands) probably makes him look a bit like Crocodile Dundee with a six-shooter on his leg.

I feel kinda bad for the dealer, but he was probably in on the cheat.

I wanted it to look like the chair under the guy taking the punch had smashed beneath him from the violence of the blow, but I think it probably reads poorly. I should have had it bursting into the foreground more, but there wasn't much room at the bottom of the illustration. Oh, well, something to learn.

4 hours, pencil on Bristol, 9x12.

Daily Deviation

Given 2006-12-16

It was noodle-scrambling to find that *Inkthinker had never received a Daily Deviation! While scooting around his gallery tonight I found Bad Hand; an older piece, yes, but still a beautiful representation of his incredible talent for movement, expression and general mischief-making. A talent that is carried on to many areas, including animation. Be sure to swing by and check out the rest of *Inkthinker's gallery! (Featured by $y2jenn)

Damn! also really nice work man!
:iconnewsonn:
Really good illustrating before us! Perhaps you may have made it harder to read with way too many shadows?

Nice contortion on the cheek, on the guy at bottom. I like how you've got bits flying everywhere but the 3 characters still read well. I like how you've given it a comical element, and how you've chosen the shadows. You know a good pic when you can predict the next action from it ... and I assume the side of the table is going to squish the guy at bottom, and pin him down.

That's more or less what I was going for, yeah. The whole table is collapsing and the edge is buried in his chest. Maybe it reads better than I thought...

There's a lot of shadow, that's for certain. It's hard for me to tell when I've gone too far, since I only really started adding shadow like this in the past few months. It's still a new experience for me, but I think it really adds a lot of depth.

That is FANTASTIC! its a little fuzzy as to whats going on right away, but its one of those images that diserves the second glance to catch up with your eyes.

I know what you mean, but I suppose it's all about setting rules for yourself and sticking to them. My biggest problem has been dumping form shadows on skin and clothes and olny accepting cast shadows. Not yet pondered half tones and reflected light.
