FantasyCraft - Bloodsworn by Inkthinker FantasyCraft - Bloodsworn by Inkthinker
Fantasy Craft is back on the radar again with A Call To Arms new series of Character Class modules for the hit Role-Playing Game. This is the cover to the "Bloodsworn" module.

Saurians (lizard people) were difficult for me to work out at first, but ultimately became some of my favorite designs. Recent discoveries about dinosaurs helped inspire some ideas that kept me from making them just two-legged man-gators.

At the time I drew 'em I had no idea these would be used as cover art, but I'm glad the guys at Crafty thought they were worthy as such. I believe the covers were painted by Octographics.

2008 Crafty Games. Crafty Games. Illustrated in Manga Studio EX v.3 using an Intuos 9x12 tablet.

No logo game in this one, sorry.

Go forth and learn by doing, my son.

:D

Seriously, practice is the best teacher. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

I've always loved the detailing and body language of the character being protected. Invoking a faintly feminine sense with -reptile- features is a heck of an accomplishment :).

(somehow the feathery double crests put me in mind of eyelashes.)

Thanks! Finding ways to make a lizard-person look feminine without looking too cartoony is a challenge, but feathers make it a lot easier.

I'm curious - which recent discoveries about dinosaurs were you referring to? I ask specifically because the design of the Saurian's face brings to mind the classical dragon.

Feathers, most specifically. Realizing that I could put a bit more bird in with the lizard helped me break out of the box my brain was stuck in. I also started thinking of the facial structure more like that of a raptor rather than a lizard, making it tall and thin rather than wide and flat.

I expect artists have been thinking along the same lines with dragon designs for a while, so really I'm just catching up.
