Another detail shot of the cover for Crafty Games new RPG, Fantasy Craft. I was asked to make a bad-ass, dangerous halfling assassin, and this is what I gots. Next time, maybe more leather.

I'm almost certainly going to change the fletching color on those arrows. I'm thinking grey, but I'm open to suggestion.

Check out more on the book at Crafty-Games.com, and stick around for more on the cover as I wrap it up.

Like the crossbow, to me is very difficult to imagine a close combat halfling expert,Belkars aside.

Oh, I don't know... they're right at crotch-height, hard to hit with heavy weapons, probably faster than they look (especially if they're adventuring types). I can imagine one getting in close and doing up your achilles, hamstrings and/or femorals pretty quickly. And if there's more than one, they'll pull you down like a pack of wolves.

:D

Keep the red fletchlings. It's perfect the way it is. Don't tamper with perfection.

Wow.

I didn't think it was possible, but you may have created the most badass halfling I've ever encountered.

I love your designs!
(And think that the red fletching suits him great)

That's some badass bow, man! Might come in handy in case the enemy gets too close. =P

Is halflings as nasty little bastards *that* much of a trope?

Because I played one as this antisocial dog-trainer and sniper long before I discovered Order of the Stick... there's OotS of course, there's the WH40K ratlings, there's this... Is it just that everyone likes the idea of the little guys being utterly ruthless?

I think anyone who sees a plausible fantasy world with big slavering maurading beasts around and full-sized humans having to strugle to survive then looks at halflings and thinks "Ok, if I were all of 3 feet tall and weighed no more than a large sack of potatoes, what the hell would I do to survive?" And the answer is ussually a combination of poison (which sort of fits into their love of growing things in a perverse way) and that mess-with-me-and-die attitude that would actually stop some of said beasties in their tracks.

Probably doesn't hurt that 3.5 halflings get some serious advantages.

I think it's become one... seems like a normal backlash to the fat, jolly vision of the halfling in most stories. Even kender tend to be clownish, happy characters. So it's not terribly surprising when people create visions that diametrically oppose the original stereotype.
