One of several class illustrations which ended up being repurposed as general spot illustrations for the Fantasy Craft RPG.
The description called for an ogre perched in a stone chimney taking aim with a massive crossbow. Ogres in FC are taller and stronger than humans, with horns of different types that sprout from their foreheads and tusks that range from tiny to troublesome. But nobody said they had to be uggo.
I had a bunch of fun designing the crossbow, though I think I probably made some conceptual errors in the mechanism's design. I intended for the beast to be reloaded by opening up the top like a hinge, which extends that scissors lever. You then put one of those huge bolts into the slot, and when you rack it closed it draws back on the string and locks it all in place. When fired, the string shouldn't proceed far enough up that it impacts the curved lever arm. There's a safety lever along the back of the stock that she's squeezing with her thumb, and of course the usual charms for level flight and a little elemental boost.
But it's junk engineering. I'm pretty sure levers don't quite work that way. Still, looks cool, huh?
To make up for the Swashbuckler not having any hidden logos, this lady has FOUR (4). One of 'em might be tricky. For additional fun, there's also one signature worked in there, too.
You kicked so much ass in this book. I've been astonished. One of my roommates got it for Christmas and is running his first game soon. I've been very very impressed with your design work and commitment to imbuing even the smallest image with explosive personality. Everything is either jumping off the page or fighting across it. It makes reading the book so much fun. Are you still working in animation as well, or have the time necessitated a shift to the static image?
I think what I appreciate the most about this piece is how you took the opportunity to challenge the memes around ogres. Sure, she still has some enlarged lower canines upon closer inspection, but before I (a) noticed them and (b) read your description, my first thoughts went to some sort of gazelle or similar animal, from the reference of the horns. Reading that the archer in question is an ogre blew the few synapses I had left today ...
Oh, don't give me too much credit for "challenging" anything in particular.
I wasn't actively making a statement or anything, I just wanted ogre women to be perceivable as sexy, but maintain the physical descriptors of the race. So horns, tusks, heavy build, etc, but nothing says that horns can't be sleek or that tusks have to be outrageously huge. And women can be muscularly built and still easily be sexy. There's a couple other examples of female ogres in the book that follow similar threads, but this illustration was one of the last that I did, and so I sorta summed it up here.
I'm still working on animated content from time to time, but the last year has been mostly comics work.
but there it is. lol.
nice work.

Insanity.
Also, I only found three symbols and the signature :c.
I love the hatching, though.
