This is the third half-page of Player Species that I illustrated for the Fantasy Craft Role-Playing Game, out now from Crafty Games. Where the first covered several extremely common Character Races, this one covers slightly less travelled territory. Click "Download" for the SuperSize version.

Saurians, Pechs, Rootwalkers and the Unborn all have their equivalents in traditional Fantasy, but nevertheless there is room to explore. I tried to give the lizard man a bit of weight and work up a "barbarian" that incorporated design tropes into the physiology. The Pech is a pretty standard halfling, but I had a mandate to try and make all halflings "bad-asses" (see the cover), so I worked that in a bit. The Rootwalker is a sentient tree, but I don't recall taking any particular reference into account there. I did want to make their head branches somewhere between a crown and horns. Last is the Unborn, which I recall being described to me as a sphere with many weapons branching off from different points (I'll have to look up the contract doc for the exact description). I don't know where he keeps that stuff when it's not deployed. Probably in his hatch.

(Actually, that's not true. I imagine it all folds up like a cartoon, Transformers-style, and that when he's not all gatted-up he's just a sphere with a bunch of knobs all over, each of which has a trick it could deploy. 'Cause I really do think about this stuff when I draw it.)

As we proceeded along the lineups, they became more interactive. Where the first was very much characters-in-a-row (despite some interaction behaviour), this one has become a full-on skirmish.

You can see on the Saurian the first time I tried using the little dip-pot design for flaming arrows/bolts (the conceit being that something in the pot catches flame if it's outside of the pot for a few seconds. Dip a weapon in it, or pour it on a blade, and you get flaming weapon. Not for the faint of heart or those particularly concerned with consequences).

There are exactly 0 Logo Variants hidden in the linework. That's right, nada. I don't recall a specific reason why, I think I just didn't hit any point where it seemed I could work it in cleanly.

Of course, I could be wrong. Let me know if you spot one.

Have I told you how much I like the orb character? The Unborn? Very cool.

And the dip pot. That's your idea? It's a good one, honestly. It's cool, and not even a bit blatantly "high fantasy".

Really difficult to be original with "standard" fantasy. You did it! Cool savage lizardman, lovable badass half-girl, devilish tree with no funny leaves on...

One of the greatest pieces of art I've ever seen.

The way you draw the Unborn reminds me of the trippy fantasy tech that shows up in some of Paul Chadwick's comics.

When mother nature attacks. The inking really brings out the stop motion pose they are in. So cool.

Head on, let's say no to the boring spiecies-standing-calmly-in-a-row. Your skirmish is simply great and dynamic.

I'm really liking this series of designs.
As for the dip pot, I couldn't imagine trying to use that myself - even the slightest of flames needs a 1 metre distance in my eyes.
