OLD WORK - Squid, Land and Sand

Description

Apologies to those who saw these as separate pieces... after thinking on it further, I decided it was better to present them together as one Deviation.

The Land Squid burrows deep beneath the earth and erupts from below to rend and consume any thing it can reach with its tentacles. Because the creature exists outside of the water, I replaced the suckers you might normally find on a squid's tentacles with little spines that would flex and pierce to hold.

The Sand Squid is a smaller creature, but no less deadly. It erupts from the shifting sands to entwine victims and pull them below. While designing this monster, I came up with the idea that their eyes would be covered by a cornea of crystal-clear but diamond-hard material that would withstand the constant scouring of the sands that the monster swims through. This would make for a valuable treasure item, no? I suggested it to the AD, but I think most publishers would prefer that the artist not editorialize their assignments.

I can't help it... I love coming up with little details like that. But there's no profit in it, as a freelancer, I suppose.

I think the architecture of the tower could be a LOT better... as it's being crushed, we should see some of the interior, the floor ripping up and perhaps people being thrown about inside. I'd be a little more careful about drawing the tentacles, too, but note that I did make sure he has the right number of 'em!

On the Sand Squid, though, I screwed up. Mea maxima culpa, what was I thinking by not including a freaking SHADOW on the ground?!?! Not only would it help to emphasize the blinding sunlight of the desert, but it would also add a point of visual reference delineating the relation of the character to the ground. Lesson learned... the sky could use some clouds, too. It's logical for a desert sky to be cloudless, but here I think it just makes me look lazy.
