Artist's Comments

This is an old pencil test from an even older studio project... I notice a lot of little mistakes when I watch it, and I'd do a bunch of things differently now (I think those kicks don't sell as well as they could), but I still like it because I think it exemplifies what we want to do: kick-ass action animation of the kind that you just rarely see in the US.

And even though it's an old piece, it often gets a good reaction when we show it to people. The roughs and action here, and espescially that kickin' 720 degrees of rotation, were designed by studio members that predate my inclusion, but I was the one who cleaned this puppy up and made it pretty... sort of my rite of passage here, years ago. Once I finished this (don't ask how long it took), I knew I could handle just about anything.

Sorenson 3 QT file, about 17 seconds long.

So that's 425 frames long? Man, I really do love watching these.

Do you like beautiful women as much as I do?---> Click Here

425 frames of film, yes, but not 425 drawings.

I think it's somewhere around 200+ drawings...

Mmm, that is some ass kicking goodness! Keep them coming dude. I'll just keep wiping the drool off my keyboard.

What do you expect ME to do about hordes of killer radioactive alien vampires? Use harsh language?

I agree that the kicks aren't as powerful as they could be, but it's pretty solid all around.

My god, the way you move the camera around is freaking amazing. That is some kick ass stuff.

yyyyyYEESH! You realise how much of a number you're doing on my ego? I wish I could have seen these earlier while I still had access to the school's equipment.. Greh.. I guess I better start working on my own home brewed pencil test system..
:iconinkthinker:
You should know. You designed it. It did clean up right purty, didn't it?
:iconinkthinker:
I really only take credit for cleanup and some of the motion, since I was given a lot of freedom to add or remove tweens. But I was given detailed keyframes, so I shouldn't take too much credit.

The fastest way to get very ugly but serviceable roughs is to set up a cheap webcam on a rig that locks it into position, facing down. Then just set up a flat surface with a pegbar on it, and import the captured frames into the PT software of your choice. I use the RETAS line of animation software, with Quickchecker as the PT program, but it's a Mac exclusive (for now).

If you have nothing else, you could import them into something like Premiere or AfterEffects as a sequence, as long as they're named properly. You won't be able to do much with frame placement, though... it'd be all strictly ones or twos, I shudder at the thought.
