Artist's Comments

This is a digital painting/drawing that was created for the upcoming HTF short film Kuro Kumo, which we just wrapped up. It's used as a backdrop for the opening credits as well as for cover art on the amray case and whatever other promo material we assemble... In addition, a buddy of mine who works at a shop made a print five feet long that I'm having framed. Talk about ostentatious.

:D

So let's see... drawn initially on paper, then inked in Manga Studio, colored in Photoshop, and loosely intended to mimic the style of ukiyo-e woodblocks from Japan. I was going more for the dominant aesthetic characteristics than attempting to create an authentic replication of the techniques, so it's not like it's going to fool anyone, but I think it evokes the right sense of period for the film that it accompanies. If you been following along for a while, you might recall this early sketch for the centerpiece:

Took about 18 hours of drawing and painting in total, I think. The biggest pain was keeping the thing at a fairly high resolution... the workfile is about 3 feet wide and about 400dpi in resolution. This was done not only so that we could make some big prints, but also because in the opening credits we wanted to be able to zoom in closely and focus on individual characters as well as pull back to display the whole image.

You mimiced this old art style well-- AND DAMN! This is nice! I'd actually buy a print if one were available; can't imagine the cost of it, though (most likely absurdly high).

Damn, mate! I love this.

nice. you outclassed yourself this time. great work man.
18 hours was worth it. ;)

I tried applying as a Sherpa, but they declined. They say I delay the climb by building snowmans and chasing around Mountain Goats when I feel the jiggy...

YES. DUDE. YES. Instant fave. It is so rare to see actual traditional style Japanese art, especially depicting samurai as they were depicted in the period. That rocks so hard.

I love it. I think you made the balance between the traditional style and modern linework perfectly, and the outcome is awesome. Awesome awesome awesome... Do we get to see the finished short anytime soon?
