I've got a tip for the cables:
If you're using CS2, you can set up a hard round brush at a fixed maximum opacity and 0 spacing. Then set up the layer effects using Outer Glow and Stroke and Color Overlay.
With this, you can freehand your cables while the Color Overlay lets you easily adjust the colour of the cable, the Stroke can be used to expand the core of the cable, and the Outer Glow effect can be used to make the black outline on the cable (and you can also affect the softness on the outside of the cable by adjusting the gradient.

Up to now, I've been laying down one line with a path and then either adjusting the path for the other line, or duplicating the first line and transforming it. It's been a bit cadgy, though, espcially with sharp curves.
