Brothers By Blood - Pencil

Pencils for the cover to the Kenzer & Co. "Soloquest" book, Brothers By Blood. I'm really looking forward to my comp on this one, 'cause I LOVED those solo "Choose Your Own Adventure" and other, more complex gamebooks. I must have consumed dozens of those...



So, yeah... 14x17, no.2 pencil over red on Bristol. This took probably about 8 hours to do, overall, drawn in September of 2005. I'm kinda enjoying this pencil style, though I don't suppose it's very suitable to ink, or print for that matter. This is my first cover for Kenzer, and I enjoyed it a bunch... looking forward to more of 'em! The direction of this scene was pretty clear, but I had a lot of opportunities to get creative with patterns and design details.

©2005 Kenzer & Co. I need to make it clear that I can't offer this one up for color practice. There's other stuff I got in this style if you'd like something to mess with, but not this one', 'kay? Hence the sepia and watermark... and in addition this is the "dirty" pencil version, flipped and without the red undersketch stripped out. Honestly, I kinda like it better this way, at least as a pencil illustration. You can check out the final painted version (which I did not paint, by the way) at the Kenzer site.
